Starting a new podcast is not just about recording a few minutes of commentary and make it available on the Internet for others to consume. More than that, it is part of a bigger strategy.
This is especially true if you are podcasting for business.
Independent podcasters who start a podcast around a niche topic to become an authority in it also needs a strategy to determine the vision and mission of the podcast. In this article, I am going to explain the different between hosting your podcast on a standalone domain or hosted in other domain. What are the considerations, the benefits and drawbacks of each?
If you have been browsing through several podcast sites, you should realize that some podcasts have their own site, whether they carry the name of the company in the domain or not. Others are part of the company web site.
Hosting the podcast on separate domain from the company web site has several drawbacks:
1. The podcast will be seen as if it is a separate entity from the business site, unless the design and brand make it clear.
2. From the surfer's perspective, they can't notice the other sections of the company site, such as products, services, company profiles, etc.
3. Search engines see it as a different site, so you can't leverage the hard-earned inbound links that point to the podcast site (and vice versa) for the benefit of the company.
Of course, you can still link back to the company web site, including all site content structure, but it is not considered an internal page of the site.
There are different problems if you use the company web site because you still have to ask:
1. Whether to host the podcast in a directory or inside existing directory
2. Whether to use sub-domain
3. Whether to use different hosting accounts for the podcast sub-domain, files, and pages.
Search engines treat a sub-domain separately so it is better to use a new directory instead of sub-domain. The podcast files don't have to reside on the same server, it can be on the sub-domain which is hosted on a different server or use an entirely different domain.
You also need to consider the capacity of the server. If the web site is already busy, you may overload it by adding a podcast, which usually include huge files. Moving to a new and more powerful server is certainly an option, but if it isn't you can buy a new domain just for hosting podcast files or pages.
